First Ever Intensive Course in Doncaster

The McGuire Programme UK North region returned to Yorkshire to run a four day, intensive, residential stammering therapy course in Doncaster, 23rd-27th August 2017. The McGuire Programme's last course in Yorkshire was in Bradford in March 2005.

The McGuire Programme UK North region held a four day, intensive, residential stuttering therapy course in the Mercure Danum Hotel in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, from Wednesday 23rd until Sunday 27th August 2017.  It was the first time a course has been held in the vibrant town of Doncaster.  Way back in 2006 we held a course in Chesterfield and in 2005 we held one in Bradford, West Yorkshire.  A return to the area was well overdue.  Doncaster was a great choice of venue with friendly people, busy streets and shopping centres and excellent transport links via the A1 and the East coast main railway line.  Seven new students attended the course and over 60 graduates of the McGuire Programme came along to help and support the new students over the four days.

Alan Jones instructed the Doncaster course.  It was the fourth time Alan had had the opportunity to instruct a McGuire Programme course.  He had previously instructed courses in Wigan and two in his adopted home city of Cardiff.  Alan did a tremendous job and motivated the new students and the returning graduates of the Programme.  Everyone who asked for a speaking opportunity was given one and many less experienced graduates were empowered by running sessions and really getting involved with presenting the course material.

The new students were a united and cohesive group.  They really bonded together well and supported each other.  It was a highly motivated group of new students who showed a maturity and work ethic well beyond their years.  The youngest was thirteen years of age and the oldest was only thirty years old.  As usual, on the Wednesday evening they displayed a wide range of stammering behaviours.  Some were very obvious and showed freezing, struggle and distortion every time they spoke.  Others were more covert and relied heavily on tricks and avoidance strategies.  All worked hard and did incredibly well.  By the Saturday afternoon all were out on the streets of Doncaster speaking to the local people and practising everything they had learned.  Everyone on the course also did a public speech outside the Market Hall in the centre of Doncaster.  Members of the public were very supportive and some became very emotional when they heard what was being said.  Congratulations to all involved.

The course organiser for the Doncaster course was Glenn Bills.  Glenn is from Mansfield but works in nearby Sheffield.  He showed great organisational skills in the run-up to, and during, the course.  Everyone seemed happy with the venue and the course ran smoothly with very few issues.

The next McGuire Programme UK North course is in Liverpool, 1st-5th November 2017.  David Conley is instructing and Anand Mistry is the course organiser.  Please get in touch if you want to be part of yet another super positive experience!
