Two Award-Winning Films. One Powerful Message.
Over the past few days, two documentaries connected to The McGuire Programme have received significant recognition. Two Award-Winning Films. One Powerful Message.
Finding My Voice, produced by The McGuire Programme India, won Best Documentary Feature Film at the Kodaikanal International Film Festival 2026.
My Stammer, My Story, featuring members of The McGuire Programme in Ireland and Northern Ireland, won the Single Documentary Award at the Celtic Media Festival 2026.
On the surface, these are film awards. But for us, they represent something much bigger.
Stories That Need To Be Told
For decades, people who stutter have often been portrayed through a narrow lens.
The focus is usually on the struggle.
The embarrassment.
The awkward moments.
The words that wouldn’t come out.
While these experiences are real, they are only part of the story.
What these documentaries show is something different. They show people taking action. They show people facing fears they once avoided. They show people discovering confidence, connection, and possibilities they never thought were available to them. Most importantly, they show real people.
Not actors. Not scripted characters. Real people sharing real experiences.
Why This Matters
Every year, thousands of people search for answers about stuttering.
Many believe they are alone.
Many have never met another person who stutters.
Many have accepted limitations that have slowly shaped their lives.
When documentaries like these reach wider audiences, something important happens. People begin to see that change is possible. Parents begin to see hope for their children. Teachers gain a better understanding of the challenges their students face. Employers see the person beyond the stutter.
And people who stutter discover that they are not alone.
That matters.
Beyond Awareness
Awareness is important. But awareness alone is not enough. The real value of these films is that they move beyond simply describing the problem. They show people doing something about it. They show courage. They show growth. They show support. They show a community of people helping one another move beyond fear and avoidance.
That is the story we need more people to hear.
A Credit To Everyone Involved
These awards belong to many people.
To the filmmakers who recognised the importance of these stories. To the production teams who brought them to life. To McGuire Ireland and McGuire India for opening their doors and sharing their work.
To Joe O’Donnell, Sharon Gavillet, Cormac King, Kaushik Valluri, Matthew Richardson, the coaches, instructors, volunteers, and support teams who work tirelessly behind the scenes.
And most importantly, to the members who were willing to share their experiences publicly.
That takes courage.
Their willingness to tell their stories will help countless others who may currently believe that change is impossible.
Looking Forward
Winning awards is not the goal. Helping people who stutter is.
However, these awards provide something valuable. They give us an opportunity to reach people who may never have heard of The McGuire Programme. They allow us to start conversations with new audiences. They help challenge outdated assumptions about stuttering.
And they remind us that stories have power.
The stories told in Finding My Voice and My Stammer, My Story are not unique because they are exceptional. They are powerful because they are familiar.
Across Ireland, the UK, India, Germany, North America, Australia, South Africa, and beyond, thousands of McGuire Programme members have experienced similar journeys.
These films simply shine a light on what is possible.
And if two award-winning documentaries help one more person take that first step, then they have already achieved something truly remarkable. Two Award-Winning Films. One Powerful Message.
One Message
If these two award-winning documentaries share one message, it is this:
People who stutter are capable of far more than they may currently believe.
Not because fear disappears.
Not because speaking suddenly becomes easy.
And not because someone else does the work for them.
But because when people are given the right support, challenged to step beyond avoidance, and encouraged to take action, remarkable things can happen.
The stories told in Finding My Voice and My Stammer, My Story are not extraordinary because they are rare.
They are extraordinary because they are being repeated every day throughout The McGuire Programme.
Different people.
Different countries.
Different backgrounds.
The same journey.
From fear to action.
From avoidance to participation.
From surviving conversations to engaging fully in life.
That is the real achievement behind these awards.
And that is the message we hope reaches every person who stutters, every parent, every teacher, every employer, and everyone who believes they are being held back by their speech:
Your story is not finished.
