Dr Biplab Manandhar is taking charge of his life back after having a debilitating stammer for over 26 years. Here is his story.
I have been a stutterer for over 26 yrs. As is common among many of us adults, speech therapy wasn’t really helpful, especially when it came to speaking in real-life situations – buying a ticket at the train counter, ordering food at the restaurant or speaking up in class for instance.
I am a medical doctor and felt totally helpless that I could not find that “magic pill” to alleviate stammering, in spite of the fact that there are a large number of people in the world that stammer. Yes, there are 70 million in the world that stammer!

I used to browse the internet in the remote hope that somebody might have discovered some form of cure. There has been much ongoing research to find the underlying cause of stammering: Some say it is due to a neurological disorder, some say it is from a difference in basic cell metabolism, others say it is physical, and some others say it is genetic. But I realized that there is no cure for stammering.
It was in June 2016 that I heard about the McGuire Programme. I decided to join the New Delhi session in December. It was probably the best decision of my life. It was two days into the Programme that I realized it really doesn’t matter why we stammer. YES, IT REALLY DOESN’T MATTER! What matters is what we are doing about it.

- Are you deep in self-pity because of your stammer? Please don’t be!
- Are you taking pills? Please don’t! (BTW, there are no pills…even if there is “magic pill”, it is likely not coming out in our lifetime sorry to say.)
- Are you blaming your stammer on someone else? Please don’t!
- Have you given up on your dreams? Please don’t!
After going on the Programme, I started to BELIEVE in myself and that I can really do something about my speech. The New Delhi intensive course was very powerful and I returned home with a lot of tools to handle my stammer. When travelling to the course in New Delhi on that cold December day, I wrote my destination on a piece of paper for the auto-rickshaw driver as I couldn’t say the name of the destination “Gurgaon”. But while returning from the course, I not only bargained but chatted with the driver the whole way about my reason to come to Delhi. Of course, he was very encouraging and supportive. The support network is amazing and all my coaches are just superb.

I know I am at the very beginning of a long journey. A journey to better speaking and eloquence. I am in this for the long haul have the courage, work ethic and perseverance to be successful. My whole life, I pretended” to be fluent, which of course I was not. But now, I know the significance of actively showing others that I am not a fluent speaker but a person who is constantly working on my speech. I once read in a blog on stammering that “We walk on ice, they walk on the road. So we must go slow”.
Never in my dreams, I would have participated in ANY speaking contest let alone win a prize. This week, I took part in the Toastmasters International contest at the club level and came, runner-up! This is the beginning of a new life for me!
This is the beginning of a new life for me!
I strongly believe if I put my mind to it and work hard, I will defeat my stammer. I know I already smashed it the moment I participated in the public speaking contest this week! I am not going to wait for speaking opportunities to come my way. From now on, I am pro-actively going to grab them.
