Shannen McEwen

Shannen McEwen is my name, I’m from Letterkenny in Co. Donegal and I have had a stammer since I was 3 years old. Growing up, I was controlled by my stammer and it frustrated me to no end as I could not say what I wanted to say. I always tried my best to hide my stammer as I was embarrassed of it and the fear of stammering in front of people had always held me back from even the most simple of speaking situations such as making phone calls, ordering food in a restaurant or asking for a bus ticket home.

I used to hate having to communicate with people as I never knew what their reaction would be, as many times I would have had people laugh in my face and as a teenage boy that was not good for my confidence.

School was a nightmare when some of the other kids would laugh at me especially reading out loud in class. I used to get into trouble in class so I could avoid these and similar situations. So basically my time in High School was in the principal’s office.

The day incorporated lots of drilling and presentations.  With courage we headed out on Street Contacts, to face the many fears associated with #stuttering, and this proved to be very beneficial with the support of coaches and grads.

It was a good disciplined day, working on our #stutter and putting time and effort into refocusing on technique.

One of the graduates who attended the June course said “This course has really helped me because I had a big presentation to do at work on the Tuesday after the course and from all practicing of the techniques on the course, my speech was very strong throughout my presentation.”

Spring has sprung and we had fun!
