Empowering Voices: Laura Logan’s Journey from Silence to Confidence
As International Stammering Awareness Day on October 22 approaches, we want to shine a light on the powerful stories within the McGuire Programme community—stories like that of Laura Logan, a dedicated primary speech coach and trainer who turned her own struggles into a mission to help others. Her recent interview with the Northumberland Gazette highlights not only the challenges she faced but the transformative impact that the McGuire Programme has had on her life and on those she now supports.
Overcoming Adversity to Find Her Voice
Laura’s journey with stammering began at just eight years old. Before she even knew what a stammer was, she loved reading aloud and taking center stage in school plays. But when her stammer began to manifest, it quickly became a source of anxiety and isolation. “Some other children would laugh, and that’s when I knew I was different to my peers,” she shared. What followed was a struggle many people with a stammer can relate to—fear of speaking, avoidance of social situations, and the overwhelming stress of navigating a world where fluent speech is often taken for granted.
Feeling trapped by her speech difficulties, Laura even learned British Sign Language to avoid speaking altogether. She describes herself as a “covert stammerer,” mastering the art of hiding her stammer but constantly burdened by the anxiety of potentially being exposed.
Discovering the McGuire Programme: A Turning Point
It wasn’t until 2019 that Laura’s life began to change. Through the McGuire Programme, she found a path to self-acceptance and strength that allowed her to break free from the limitations of her stammer. Laura credits the techniques she learned through the programme with transforming her approach to communication: “The techniques I’ve learnt have enabled me to move from being uncommunicative, hiding behind sign language…to now seeking out speaking situations to push further out of my comfort zone.”
Laura’s experience resonates deeply with the McGuire Programme’s emphasis on “responding instead of reacting.” It’s not just about learning techniques to manage stammering; it’s about transforming one’s relationship with the condition, facing challenges head-on, and building resilience.
Becoming a Beacon of Hope
Laura’s story is a powerful reminder that change is possible. Today, she is a certified primary speech coach, inspiring others with her openness and dedication. She has presented at conferences, led McGuire Programme intensive courses, and even launched her own YouTube channel where she shares her journey with the world. These achievements once seemed beyond reach, but now they’re part of her mission to raise awareness and show others that there is a way forward.
Reflecting on how far she’s come, Laura emphasizes that the benefits extend beyond just speech fluency: “It’s not just about learning to overcome your stutter; it can positively improve your mental well-being as hiding from the everyday world behind your stammer was exhausting, stressful, and awful.”
A Message for International Stammering Awareness Day
As Laura continues to raise awareness about stammering, she reminds others to practice empathy and patience when interacting with people who stammer: “If you know someone with a speech impediment, give them time… Don’t look away, don’t interrupt them or try to finish their sentences.” Her words serve as an important reminder that understanding and support can make a world of difference to those living with a stammer.
In Laura’s story, we see the strength that comes from embracing vulnerability and the impact of community support in helping people transform their lives. Her message aligns with the spirit of International Stammering Awareness Day—encouraging us all to listen more deeply, to see the person behind the stammer, and to recognize the power of resilience.
