Finding Voices in Reading, UK: A Week of Transformation
Earlier this September, members of the McGuire Programme gathered in Reading for one of our intensive courses, held at the PentaHotel from September 3rd to 7th. Over these four powerful days, people who stutter, both new students and returning graduates, came together to challenge themselves, to learn, and to experience once again the strength of our worldwide community.
From the very first day, there was a sense of energy and commitment in the room. New students arrived unsure of what to expect, but quickly began to support one another as they stepped outside their comfort zones. Graduates, many returning to refresh their skills, brought focus, encouragement, and honesty, setting a strong example of what disciplined speaking looks like.
One of the highlights of the course was the creativity and courage shown during our evening sessions. Our international coaches, particularly those visiting from Denmark, inspired both new and returning members with their discipline, warmth, and innovative approaches to practice. Their presence reminded us that stammering is not bound by borders, and that the solutions we work on together reach across cultures and languages.
Another powerful moment came on the final day, when new students prepared short leaving speeches. These were heartfelt, concise, and moving, each one a reflection of the courage it takes to confront fear and the joy that comes from finding your voice. The speeches also underlined an important truth: the journey doesn’t end with one course. It continues every day, with the support of coaches, graduates, and a worldwide network of people who understand.
Throughout the course, we saw friendships form, fears challenged, and breakthroughs celebrated. Whether it was supporting one another during speaking challenges, making phone calls home to share progress, or simply sitting together to encourage a peer, the sense of community shone through. Videos sent in from members around the world were a reminder that this support is not just local, but truly global.
The Reading course was made possible by a dedicated team of instructors, organisers, and graduates who gave their time, energy, and encouragement. To everyone who stepped up to lead, to coach, and to support, thank you. Your impact is felt not just in the room, but in every word spoken after.
As one of our instructors reflected: “Speaking is important, but speaking is also fun and nobody displays that better than Jenn.”
That spirit, of courage, discipline, and joy, is what we carry forward from Reading.
