Overcoming Stuttering in Newry: A Report on the McGuire Programme Course June 2024
Newry, Northern Ireland – From June 26th to June 29th, 2024, the McGuire Programme hosted a transformative three-day intensive course at the Canal Court Hotel. This empowering event welcomed five new students and 30 returning members, all dedicated to overcoming stuttering.
Under the expert guidance of Course Instructor Cormac King and Regional Director Joe O Donnell, participants engaged in rigorous training sessions. They learned innovative techniques through repetition, adopting a warrior mentality, and participating in personal one-on-one coaching designed to instill confidence and improve speech.
The McGuire Programme uniquely combines physical techniques with psychological elements, aiming to empower individuals to gain control over their speech. The New students were filled with nerves on Wednesday night and were committed to mastering the techniques through dedicated effort. The supportive atmosphere created by returning members, who continue their journey to overcome stuttering, fostered an environment of encouragement and camaraderie.
“The dedication shown by both new and returning members is truly inspiring,” said Cormac King. “It takes immense courage to confront one’s speech impediment, and the progress we’ve witnessed this week is a testament to their hard work and perseverance. The new students were committed to changing their old habits by building stronger, new habits in overcoming stuttering.”
Each day began with breathing exercises aimed at controlling airflow, followed by practising a controlled way of speaking to apply in real-life situations. The programme also addresses the psychological aspects of stuttering, helping students manage their mental and emotional challenges.
As the course concluded on Saturday, attendees attended an inspiring session with guest speaker James McGinn, Managing Director of Hastings Hotels. He shared his journey of overcoming struggles and finding the right support to succeed. His story resonated deeply with the attendees, reinforcing the programme’s message of perseverance and resilience.
