World Compliment Day: A Small Act of Courage That Changes Everything
Today is World Compliment Day.
A simple idea on the surface, say something kind to someone else.
But when you really look at it, it’s far more powerful than that.
Because for many of us, especially those of us who grew up struggling with our speech, speaking up to a stranger is not a small thing.
It’s an act of courage.
The Irish Problem… (And Maybe It’s Not Just Irish)
I’m Irish.
And like many Irish people, I grew up in a culture where we don’t always take compliments very well.
Someone says something nice and we immediately dismiss it:
- “Ah stop…”
- “No it’s nothing…”
- “Sure look…”
We deflect.
We minimise.
We wipe the compliment out.
But here’s the thing:
If we don’t allow ourselves to receive kindness…
it becomes much harder to give it.
And giving it, that’s where the real magic happens.
A Compliment Is More Than Words
When you give someone a genuine compliment, you are doing much more than commenting on their shoes or their hair.
You are:
- Making eye contact
- Starting a conversation
- Stepping outside your comfort zone
- Using your voice with intention
- Creating a human connection
And for a person who stutters, this is exactly the type of behaviour that builds control, confidence, and freedom in speaking.
In Beyond Stuttering, Dave McGuire describes stuttering as a fear-based phobia.
The way forward is not waiting for the fear to disappear, it is taking action in spite of it.
A compliment is a perfect example of this.
It is a small, positive, meaningful speaking challenge.
Try This Today
At some point today, speak to a stranger.
Keep it simple and genuine.
- “I like your jacket.”
- “That colour really suits you.”
- “Great haircut.”
- “Those shoes are brilliant.”
Say it, pause, breathe, speak, release.
No rush.
No perfection required.
Just a moment of real human interaction.
Why This Matters
We live in a world where people are increasingly disconnected.
Many people move through their day without a single meaningful interaction.
Your one sentence, your one compliment, might be the only kind word they hear today.
It might lift them.
It might shift their emotional state.
It might even change how they treat the next person they meet.
And for you?
You have just taken another step forward in your speaking journey.
You didn’t wait for confidence.
You created it through action.
A McGuire Perspective
In the McGuire Programme we often say:
“Every time you speak is an opportunity to use technique.”
Today gives you dozens of those opportunities.
And this is not about being perfect.
It’s about being present, assertive, and willing.
One More Challenge
Not only give a compliment today.
Receive one.
When someone says something kind to you:
Pause.
Breathe.
Say:
“Thank you.”
And allow it to land.
That is also part of the journey.
Final Thought
A compliment is a small act.
But small acts repeated consistently create big change.
So today:
Speak.
Connect.
Encourage.
And remember…
You are not just changing your own speech.
