From Documentary to Gogglebox: Why My Stammer, My Story Matters
When My Stammer, My Story aired on BBC Northern Ireland, we knew it would resonate with people who stammer and with anyone who has ever struggled to be heard. What we didn’t expect was to see Courtney and Nathan’s journey discussed on Gogglebox Ireland, bringing their courage into living rooms across the country in a whole new way.
In the episode, viewers reacted with empathy as Courtney and Nathan completed the McGuire Programme’s three-day intensive and stepped onto the Belfast soapbox. One Gogglebox participant admitted, “That’s difficult for a lot of people. I even have a problem with this and I have perfect diction.”
That’s the power of the McGuire Programme: it’s not about “fixing” stammering, it’s about developing skills, building resilience, and choosing courage in moments when fear wants to take over. Courtney’s words say it all: “I feel like I have finally found my voice.”
For us, it’s encouraging to see the conversation grow, from BBC One NI to BBC iPlayer, and now through the reactions on Gogglebox Ireland. Every time stammering is talked about openly, stigma is reduced, and people who stutter are reminded that support exists.
