Stop Playing Defense: Why You Need a War Mentality
At McGuire, we start with a War Mentality. Why?
We just finished another intensive course here in the USA/Canada region. Looking at the new students on Thursday morning, I saw the same look I once had: someone exhausted from playing defense against their own speech.
Let’s be real. Stuttering isn’t just a “medical condition” you wait to have cured. As an out of control stutterer, It’s a daily battle and its exhausting.
At McGuire, we start with a War Mentality. Why? Because when you’re terrified to say your own name, you aren’t looking for “fluency”, you’re looking for a way out of the foxhole. We give you these weapons: Coastal Breathing, Hit and Hold, Deep Tone, and immediately releasing any blocks to counteract Freezing, Struggle, Distortion, using Tricks and Avoidance. That’s how we break down stuttering.
You stay in that War Mentality until you’ve won enough battles to prove to yourself that you are in control, not your stutter.
Level Up to the Sport
Once you’ve proven you can handle the pressure, we switch gears. That’s when the Sports Mentality kicks in.
We move from “surviving” a conversation to mastering it. Like any athlete, we train. We work on our technique, use our “speech gym” (our support network), and daily support and encourage each other and work daiy on our speech. We don’t just want you to talk; we want you to command the room and be better than normal-fluent speakers
No White Coats. No Clinical Talk.
This program is run by people who stutter. I’ve been where you are, and every coach on that course has too. We don’t sit behind a desk and give advice; we’re out on the street with you, hitting the targets and proving that FSDTA doesn’t own us anymore.
If you’re tired of the tricks and the hiding, come and get the method you need to fight back.
