You Don’t Have to Face Stuttering Alone – Reflections from Our Düsseldorf Intensive Course
Small in Numbers. Strong in Commitment. You Don’t Have to Face Stuttering Alone
Some weekends stay with you long after they have finished.
Our latest McGuire Programme intensive course in Düsseldorf was one of them.
Although the group was small, the commitment, determination and sense of community were anything but.
Participants travelled from across Europe and beyond, representing Spain, Ireland, Russia, Germany, Norway, Croatia, The Netherlands, Algeria, Hungary, the Czech Republic, France, Denmark and India. Different backgrounds, different life experiences, but all arriving with the same goal: to become more confident communicators.
The weekend also happened to coincide with one of the hottest periods of the year.
Temperatures reached almost 39°C, prompting sporting events across Europe to rethink their schedules. Just as endurance athletes adapted to the conditions, we adjusted our timetable too. Rather than carrying out our street contacts during the hottest part of the afternoon, participants headed into Düsseldorf between 10am and midday to speak with complete strangers before returning to the venue for lunch and afternoon workshops.
The change worked remarkably well.
The heat was demanding. It tested concentration, energy and resilience. Yet nobody allowed the weather to become an excuse. Every participant honoured the commitment they had made to themselves, embracing every workshop, every speaking opportunity and every challenge.
The weekend also brought an unexpected logistical hurdle. A last-minute venue change meant travelling between the accommodation and training venue by tram throughout the course. What initially appeared to be an inconvenience quickly became a pleasant surprise. Our new home for the weekend, a welcoming yoga studio, provided exactly the calm atmosphere we needed, surrounded by cafés, restaurants and local shops where conversations continued long after the workshops had finished.
Sometimes the unexpected turns out to be exactly what was needed.
As the days passed, something else became increasingly obvious.
The group was becoming more than a collection of individuals.
You Don’t Have to Face Stuttering Alone
After returning home, one participant described it perfectly:
“I really felt like we were becoming a little McGuire family.”
Another reflected on something many people who stutter will recognise:
“Fear accounted for about 90% of my struggle.”
And a member celebrating the tenth anniversary of joining the Programme wrote:
“Whatever articulate eloquence means to each of us, getting there is much easier with company.”
Those words capture the spirit of the weekend better than any timetable or photograph ever could.
The McGuire Programme has never been about simply learning techniques. It is about changing habits, changing beliefs and discovering that you don’t have to face the journey alone.
A heartfelt congratulations to everyone who attended. Your courage, openness and willingness to support one another made this another memorable Düsseldorf course.
