Community and Confidence at the Heart of the McGuire Programme’s Newry Course.
The McGuire Programme’s latest intensive training course, held from 22nd – 25th October at the Canal Court Hotel in Newry, will be remembered as one of the most uplifting and collaborative events delivered in the Irish Region.
Over four days, returning members, coaches, and new students came together for concentrated training, emotional reflection, and a renewed sense of unity, community and confidence.
This year’s course carried special significance with the return of Joe O’Donnell, former Regional Director of the Irish Region, who stepped back into the role of instructor.
Joe, known for his dynamic leadership style and energising teaching methods set the tone for an atmosphere where every participant felt empowered. His approach encouraged members to take on leadership roles, helping cultivate a shared sense of responsibility and ownership throughout the programme.
“Joe has a way of making everyone feel as though they’re not just attending the course, they’re actively helping to run it,” said one coach. “That sense of involvement builds confidence faster than anything.”
A Community of Support
Across the course’s four days, the McGuire Programme once again showcased one of its greatest strengths: a deeply rooted culture of support. Coaches worked closely with new students on breathing techniques, disciplined speech patterns, and structured communication strategies. Many described the environment as “a family,” where encouragement was constant and genuine.
Group sessions offered some of the most powerful moments of the weekend, as members shared personal stories, challenges, and breakthroughs. Speakers emphasised that meaningful progress in speech is rarely achieved alone, it relies on connection, accountability, and a strong, understanding network.
Inspiring Guest Speakers
Two guest speakers added further depth to the experience:
Geraldine Mullen, invited to speak on hope and resilience, delivered a heartfelt message about perseverance through adversity. She stressed the importance of building a strong support system and leaning on others during moments of doubt, a message that deeply resonated with participants who see the McGuire Programme as a cornerstone of their personal growth.
John Leech, representing Toastmasters International, focused on the value of clear, intentional communication. In his workshop, he highlighted how structured speech and mindful delivery can boost confidence in both personal and professional settings. His contribution reinforced the complementary relationship between the McGuire Programme and other organisations dedicated to public speaking.
A Memorable Milestone
Participants left the Newry course praising not only the practical training but the camaraderie, vulnerability, and connection that defined the four days. Many new students said they felt empowered, supported, and welcomed into a community committed to helping each person thrive.
As the McGuire Programme continues its mission to support people who stutter in reclaiming their voices, the Newry course stands out as a shining example of what can be achieved when instruction, community, and shared purpose come together.
